Podcast interview full of Delaware Speedway stories with Derek “Rock” Botten
I first jotted down the note, “start a podcast” many years ago. I’ve been thinking about a podcast for for a while; a long while. All this time later, I’ve finally got an episode to share. And it’s full of Delaware Speedway stories.
In this first episode, I visited with my very good friend, Derek “Rock” Botten, a deeply respected radio broadcasting legend in this part of Ontario, Canada. Derek was also my former announcing partner at a stock car racing track called Delaware Speedway. And this episode, which was really just an excuse to get started with a podcast, is basically he and I recalling a bunch of our favourite Delware Speedway stories.

Derek and I first met back in 1999 when we took on our respective roles as race track announcers at Delaware Speedway. Derek was the pit report and I was “the other guy” in the tower. It was my job to provide a play-by-play while Derek would traverse the half-mile race track to wherever he needed to be. He would visit the scene of accidents, interview happy drivers in victory lane and do his best to get an interesting story from a disappointed driver whose night had ended early.
In those roles, I had to talk a for hours on end with no script while Derek must have walked many miles each race night. He even wore a fire suit to keep him safe while he would jog up and down pit road in an effort to bring the fans the “inside scoop.”
Truth Stranger Than Fiction
Some of these Delaware Speedway stories are priceless. I’ve often said that I have a vivid imagination. But even I don’t have an imagination vivid enough to make up the kinds of things that actually occur at a place like a stock car race track.
In this podcast, some memories of those times are discussed, including some that proved to be, quite literally, life and death.
I hope you enjoy our Delaware Speedway stories in the episode that started the podcast that eventually came to be known as “Journeys with the No Schedule Man.” Since Delaware Speedway was such an important part of my journey, it only seems appropriate to have started this way.
