Podcast interview with Gair Maxwell

Reinvention & Possibility - Gair Maxwell | Journeys with the No Schedule Man, Ep. 22Reinvention. That idea has come up many times in previous podcast discussions, and it’s probably no coincidence. Evolution is a key part of what the idea of being a “No Schedule Man” is all about, and it’s a fundamental fact of life. Sooner or later, we all face change, by both choice and chance. It’s what we do with those opportunities that defines the next part of our journey. And I never get tired of hearing about people who have done just that. So when I learned about Gair Maxwell and his “Reinvention Chronicles,” I just knew I’d enjoy talking to him.

I was right. You’re going to love him.

Gair Maxwell is an International Speaker, Author of the critically-acclaimed book, “Nuts, Bolts & a few Loose Screws,” and a Reinvention Strategist. With a background in Broadcast Journalism, Gair himself has been reinvented, long ago transitioning into a life of speaking, coaching and creating, which led him to being recognized as TEC Canada’s “Speaker of the Year” in 2012.

Gair brought all kinds of helpful insights to this episode. Some of them include being set up to “receive” (listen and learn) as opposed to always being stuck on “transmit” (making it about us, doing more talking than listening); Going from getting fired to getting fired up; re-purposing experiences and skills we’ve acquired throughout our journey; and what a real “window of opportunity” most often actually looks like, and what you need to do when you see one.

Three key takeaways from my time with Gair Maxwell:

  1. It’s not about the many. It’s about the ONE. You never know who’s listening / watching / reading and how what you’re sharing may impact them. Sharing your experiences openly and genuinely helps others – and ourselves – in ways we often cannot conceive of at the time. Don’t worry about thousands upon thousands of views, listens, fans, clicks, likes or shares. It’s about a genuine connection with the ONE.
  2. Understanding Purpose vs Result. For instance: the purpose of a business is to make money. Is it? Or is that the result of fulfilling the real purpose?
  3. Focus on Possibility as opposed to problems. This is a great lesson in business and in life.

This particular conversation took place in a coffee shop. So it sounds like we’re, well, in a coffee shop. So brew a fresh cup, pull up a seat and sit in with us. It was a fun and lively conversation that I’m sure you’ll enjoy.

    It’s a great podcast!
I think that when it’s said that it’s about the one, it all makes sense. Ina way or another, we always impact other people. As an example, if we write articles, reviews, opinions and news, this will help shape people’s perception about those subjects and we should be always aware of that.
    Thanks for sharing.

      Hi Marcelo,
That’s a very good point, and we actually discussed it as part of the podcast – be careful when you read/watch/review anything, including this podcast, as you must appreciate that, while it may may helpful (that’s certainly the intention), it’s coming from someone else’s perspective. You’ve got to decide whether or not what you’re receving aligns with your values or not.
      Thanks again & best wishes

What an awesome podcast and site. I am really impressed.

I like the saying “it’s not about the many, it’s about the ONE”.
Too many people focus on quantity over quality and then wonder why it doesn’t bring them the results they are expecting!

    • Kevin says:

Thank you David. Well said. I agree. I really appreciated Gair positioning it that way and have been considering it ever since.
      Best wishes,
      Kevin

HI Kevin, although I have been having some technical problems with my aging laptop, I was able to listen to just the beginning of the podcast and was very impressed.
There were seven points that I wrote down from Reinvention & Focusing on the Possibilities that was inspiring and motivating to me.

“It’s not about the many, it’s about the one”, left me feeling like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. Purpose -vs- results and the example given about business made me look at my business in a whole new light. Possibilities -vs- problems, receive -vs- transmit , overcome adversities – see the opportunities, re-purpose skills, and recognize and pursue opportunities all which are very powerful not only in the business sense but for our lives in general.

Thank you for this awesome wake-up call. Looking forward to hearing more from you my friend!

      Hi Suzette,
Those are very kind things to say. Thank you for your kind words and encouragement. It’s really nice to hear that you were able to take away a few things from what Gair Maxwell shared that were inspiring and/or motivating. The purpose vs result and “it’s not about the many” have had me thinking ever since we had the discussion. Really great stuff.
Thanks again for your very nice comments. I’m very grateful.
      Best wishes,
      Kevin

I like the theme of this podcast very much.
It helps to share your experiences with other people openly. I think it’s helpful for both others and yourselves. I do agree with that statement. When I give someone a feedback or advice it’s because I also need to hear it and follow it.

Understanding purpose vs. result. I do agree that money is the result of fulfilling the real purpose.
Last but not least focusing on possibilities is far more powerful than focusing on problems. When I use the word problem, it get me stuck, and I am not able to move forward with enthusiasm. When I use the word possibility, I don’t longer feel stuck but can take steps towards my goal.

    Thanks for sharing.

    • Kevin says:

      Hi Tove,
I love what you’ve said here, especially this: “When I give someone feedback or advice it’s because I also need to hear it and follow it.” That’s VERY well said! I think most of us have a tougher time following the advice for ourselves that seems obvious to offer to those we love. I know I struggle with that sometimes. Great advice.
Thank you for your comments and kind words.
      Best wishes,
      Kevin
