About the song: This song is a hybrid of two others I’d written years ago. With one, I became rather attached to the lyrics. In the other, I liked the melody. I took what I liked most from each, tweaked it, and came up with this tune, which I was still writing even after we had recorded several others for this CD. I might have left it for another time except for the line “Hope over hurt, soul over skin, faith over apathy” which, for me, defines this entire project and the mission for my spirit in general.
Lyrics:
We are pilgrims adrift in a desperate age
Our hearts and our minds slightly disengaged
A rose-coloured lense tainting what we see
Confusing our faith … with things we choose to believe
We can keep turning differences into resistance
Or, all stand together and sing
Hope over hurt, Soul over skin
Faith over apathy
(Yeah) We can debate this machine we’ve created
Or, all stand together and sing
Hope over hurt, Soul over skin
Faith over apathy
We are arrogant prisoners of our own shadows of doubt
Bound by decadent walls we built with no easy way out
With mercy eroding and spirits in need of repair
The devil is dancing but hope has a chance if we won’t submit to despair
We can keep turning differences into resistance
Or, all stand together and sing
Hope over hurt, Soul over skin
Faith over apathy
(Yeah) We can debate this machine we’ve created
Or, all stand together and sing
Hope over hurt, Soul over skin
Faith over apathy
At the end of a day when all hope has been slain
Seems a mountainous leap to believe
But we look and we listen and love once again
Hoping that our hearts will be free
And will choose more compassionately
We can keep turning differences into resistance
Or, all stand together and sing
Hope over hurt, Soul over skin
Faith over apathy
(Yeah) We can debate this machine we’ve created
Or, all stand together and sing
Hope over hurt, Soul over skin
Faith over apathy
