You probably know there’s a sort of interesting paradox to having a marketing message and strategy that actually connects effectively with other people.
But as you look around, how many small-to-midsize advertisers do you notice doing it well?
On one side of it, there is the matter of creating and nurturing a unique, magnetic brand story and strategy. In order to do that, we’ve got to know exactly who we are – and who we are not – and feed that original story in absolutely everything we do.
On the other side of it, there is the matter of effectively communicating to – and connecting with – the people we’re looking to serve. In that case, if we want their attention, then it’s not about us. It has to be about them, at least to some extent.
After you read this, you may find yourself noticing how local advertisers have this backwards. They’re spending a lot of time and money to “parrot” some version of someone else’s story (usually while saying that they’re somehow different), but then talk all about themselves when they’re looking to attract someone else’s attention.
See the irony?
And the paradox?
Wouldn’t it be amazing if you were actually able to make this work for you, so you could set yourself further apart, actually connect with more of the right customers and grow your business and brand?
Well, you can.
Not only is it effective, but it’s a whole lot of fun. Holler at me if you’d like my help.

In both cases, it pretty much comes down to just being true to yourself … a principle which is fundamentally simple, but not necessarily easy to do.
